A lifelong condition with regular treatment carries a real emotional load, and it’s completely normal to feel it. Feeling low or stressed can also make it harder to keep up with chelation — so looking after your wellbeing genuinely helps your health too.

Support comes in many forms: talking to family and friends, meeting others with thalassaemia (peer support and patient groups help a lot), and professional help from a counsellor, psychologist or social worker. Good thalassaemia centres aim to make this available.

The move from paediatric to adult care (“transition”) can be a wobbly time — ask your team to support it. Reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness.
