Blood transfusion

Why regular transfusions?

A transfusion tops up healthy red cells so your haemoglobin stays high enough to feel well — and, importantly, high enough to switch off the “overdrive” in the bone marrow that would otherwise cause bone changes, an enlarged spleen and poor growth.

Regular transfusions support normal growth and development, good energy levels, and normal activity. They are the foundation of thalassaemia care and a major reason survival has improved so much.

Never skip or delay a transfusion without speaking to your team first — letting haemoglobin fall too low undoes that protection and strains the heart.

This is general information about thalassaemia, not medical advice. Your own care depends on your history and test results — always talk to your thalassaemia team before changing anything about your treatment.
